Light Up the Dark In Gurnos

Young People from Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil, developed ideas for  a Community Lantern Parade, around the theme of Spring. “It’s dark everywhere at night, there’s not enough light”. (Young Person) this is how we named the title of the project “Light Up the Dark In the Gurnos”.

Our aim is to support the “Focus on improving the core skills of young people at high risk through engagement in Personal and Social Development Programmes including access to creative arts activity opportunities, in preparation of the opening of the new 3Gs Arts, Culture and Media Facility”

A week of workshops open to all ages took place at the Calon Las Centre during February Half Term,  aimed at  encouraging the generations to come together, to share experiences and to create whilst creating.

52 participants got involved, to include members of the youth club, and other participants from Barnardo’s young carers, and the local community, in Mask & Banner Making, and Lanterns, to include the Sun, Stars, Moon, Bee’s and Flowers.

Community Music Wales will provide Drumming Workshops with a group of young people at the Youth Zone to Lead the Small Parade to share with the local community.

Thanks  to 3Gs Development Trust, Melvyn Jones, Senior Youth Worker Sarah Williams,  Barnardos Project Worker Geraldine Maddison, for all their support.
