Inspired by a 100 year old Peter Conacher Organ that is currently resting in Theatr Soar, Merthyr Tydfil, Creative Collaborations is an exciting project funded by the Arts Council For Wales (ACW).
Working with children and young people from Ysgol Santus Tudful, our lead artists explore its history and stories through music, dance and digital storytelling to breath new life into this unique instrument.
The vision was to create an exciting, innovative, participatory project that combines multi arts disciplines – digital, dance, voice and music – an immersive experience that collaborates with Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Santes Tudful, Artis Community, Breaking Barriers Community Arts and Theatre Soar.
The project had some core areas, all inspired by the cultural context of the Peter Conacher Organ. The narrative includes the physical mechanics in creating a functional instrument, the evolution of its power source, the era in which this instrument was in part, a catalyst for mass participation (Cymanfa Ganu), its impact on local musicology (E.T. Davies, D.T. Davies, Joseph Parry), its re-awakening as the ‘lungs of Merthyr’, its relevance and inspiration for young people today, and its future.
On the 14th November 2018 ‘Song of the organ’ was performed in Theatre Soar Main Theatre Space, a performance stimulating all the senses as well as a wonderful permanent exhibition created by the young people.
The next stage of the project is to work with young people from Ysgol Evan James and the Peter Conacher Organ residing in Pontypridd Museum.
