Artists Heinrich and Palmer Appointed for YMCA Public Art Commission Glass Work!
The redevelopment of the Pontypridd YMCA has reached an exciting phase! Through a collaboration between Pontypridd YMCA, Artis Community, RCT Arts Services and local public art specialists Addo Creative we are delighted to announce that artists Heinrich & Palmer have been selected to develop 2D designs for the glass parapet level façade of the YMCA building in Pontypridd. The public art commission is funded by Arts Council of Wales as part of its contribution to the wider Pontypridd YMCA redevelopment. The finished artwork will be installed ready for the opening of the building in Summer/Autumn 2021 – this does of course depend on the on-going impact of Covid-19 restrictions. All work during this period will be done while following the latest social distancing guidance.
Anna Heinrich and Leon Palmer are two British artists who have worked in collaboration since the early 1990s. They have a broad, cross-disciplinary practice, which encompasses installations, large-scale projection events, films and photography. They have a site-specific approach and frequently combine ephemeral media such as digital film, light, sound and projection with physical materials and structures to draw out alternative or ambiguous meanings. Many of their projects evolve through a process of research, engagement or collaboration with people from other disciplines such as architects, engineers, programmers and fabricators.
“The redevelopment of the YMCA is a landmark project for Pontypridd. This public art commission is an exciting way of engaging with the local community while the building work continues and we are delighted to be able to work with Heinrich & Palmer on this exciting project.” – Kay Walters, Chair Pontypridd YMCA
